Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) is an international honor society for those seeking college credentials. PTK was first founded on November 19th, 1918, and has been helping serve students for over 100 years.
PTK assists students in high academic standing through workshops, scholarships, and even conventions. PTK helps provide many essential life skills and creates a space for students to network.
PTK’s mission statement is, “Recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students and; Provide opportunities for individual growth and development through participation in honors, leadership, service and fellowship programming.”
Pensacola State College has two PTK Chapters. These include the Theta Chi Chapter on the Pensacola campus and the Beta Beta Gamma Chapter on the Milton campus.
Specific requirements for enrollment are listed on the PSC website. Eligible students receive an invitational email that provides instruction on initiating their membership.
The Theta Chi Chapter has several service projects in the works for the Spring Semester. The biggest of those is their “Encounters of Hope” fundraising production.
“Encounters of Hope” will be put on by a local dance company named Chadduh. The performance will convey true stories of human trafficking.
This event aims to raise funds for the “Transformation through Education” Scholarship. This scholarship was specifically designed to assist survivors of human trafficking by helping them pursue their educational goals at PSC.
This event will be happening at the Jean and Paul Amos Studio on February 5th from 6:30-8:00 PM. The tickets are $14 and can be found at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/encounters-of-hope-tickets-245849882617.
The Theta Chi Chapter is also accepting volunteers to aid with ticket collecting and ushering. If individuals are interested, they can reach out to Jeffery Wooters, the Chapter Advisor, at jwooters@pensacolastate.edu.
The Theta Chi Chapter also recently hosted a OneBlood drive on campus. There were a great number of donors and 22 units were collected.
Other upcoming events include two New Member Orientations that will spread more information about the Theta Chi Chapter and how to get involved. Any PSC student is welcome to attend.
The first will be taking place in person in Building 17 Room 1707 on 02/08/22 at 4 PM. The second will be a virtual meeting over Zoom on 02/11/2022 at 10 AM.
Trinity Miller, the VP of Communications and a Pre-Med major, says, “My favorite aspect of PTK is all the benefits such as scholarships, guest speakers, volunteer opportunities, along with being a big family. PTK has helped me reach my goals by staying on top of upcoming events that are happening, especially if you are an officer, so it gives you that leadership role that everyone deserves.”
