Showcasing Creativity: Student Art Awards Exhibition

On Tuesday, April 8, the Visual Arts Department at Pensacola State College held its annual student art awards show to honor students’ artistic achievements. The expo included diverse mediums, such as digital design, drawing, ceramics, painting, sculpture, and photography.

Of the 183 pieces entered, only 75 were displayed, and even fewer were awarded. It was also announced that night that the award-winning pieces would be featured in the inaugural exhibition in the Pensacola State College Foundation’s newly renovated welcome center and presentation space.

The juror, New Orleans painter Gina Phillips, stated she was looking for “a strong command of craft, precision, tradition, and innovation” when choosing the pieces for the show. One award dubbed the President’s Award was accepted by Christina Dean for her Graphite drawing, “A Loved Fox.”

This portrait will be hung outside the Pensacola State president’s office for viewing over the next year. Some awards were also handed out with monetary prizes. Oceana Emerson deservedly won best in show, receiving $500 for her 3-D moving sculpture, aptly given the name “Oceanic Whitetip Shark.” Even though the pieces presented were the focus of the show, academic success was also a key factor for the judges.

Veteran Neil Boekel was the recipient of the Visual Art Department Service Award, not just for his photography, but because he is well regarded in the department as a constant positive influence. Though the award ceremony has already taken place, the pieces will be displayed in the Switzer Gallery until May 2.
