Pensacola is known for its white sand beaches, but this past month snow covered the ground instead. On January 21, Pensacola experienced a record-breaking snowfall of 8.9 inches as reported by the National Weather Service. This beat both the city’s previous 130-year-old record of 3 inches and the state’s previous record of 4 inches in Milton in 1954. The last time a winter storm event like this was recorded in Pensacola was in January 2014 with light sleet and minimal snowfall.

With this once in a lifetime snow event and closures all across the city, citizens took to the streets to take advantage of the powdery snowfall. Parks were filled with people skiing and snowboarding—whether using proper snowboards, deconstructed longboards, or any other tool to ride the historic snow hills.

The Corsair team has compiled some photos of the snow to commemorate this special Florida snow day. (Byline)
