Note to readers: Hello everyone, I must apologize for last week’s missing column.  As you all have heard in the past, XBOX 360s have a history of “red rings,” in which the system locks up and shows a full red ring on the power button of the system.  Well, I was unlucky enough to receive such a red ring, and now I must send in my 360 so they can  fix it or send me a new one.

Today, I will be reviewing a game that flunked on the PS3, and that is Virtua Fighter 5 online.  This game has all of the Virtua Fighter 5 gameplay from the PS3, but they added an online mode.  Surprising?  Not really.  Virtua Fighter is a very hot selling game in Japan, especially in the arcades, and it is well known for its system to system play down in the land of the rising sun.  But, how did it fare when they took it to America.

First of all, the single player, you have the traditional arcade mode and versus mode.  But, they also added something from Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution, Quest Mode.  Quest mode is where you move from system to system, training your fighter as he levels up from a 10th Kyu to a 10th Dan.  This mode is extremely fun, and yet, sometimes it will be extremely frustrating.  It didn’t take me long to get from 10th Kyu to 1st Kyu, and from there to 5th Dan, but trying to move up higher from there is a pain.

So, now to the online mode.  In my honest opinion, which is almost worth nothing nowadays, I really didn’t like online mode.  All you do is run around the online area, looking for 1-on-1 matches.  They should have done like DOA did and make rooms, not just fight one person then leave.  That was a bad idea on their part, but ah well, what can you do.

So, to recap:

Pros: Great Game play, Quest Mode, Simplified fighting.

Cons: Slightly Frustrating High Level Enemies, Online Mode needs work.

My Rating: B+, so close to an A-
