We Asked Our Staff: Halloween Costumes

By Arren Joseph-White

As Halloween draws closer, we ask ourselves what we might be for the day of tricks and treats.

Need some help choosing a costume? Our lovely staff at the Corsair has gathered their favorite and least favorite costumes for the season.

Please remember these are just opinions; your costume choices are your own. Halloween is a time of self-expression and fun, and whatever you choose to be should be your own choice, swayed by no one.

That disclaimer aside, here’s what the Corsair staff had to say about costumes.

Arren Joseph-White, Editor-In-Chief:
My favorite costumes are the characters or references that are kinda niche or unknown. I’ve done quite a few of those kinds of costumes and it’s always hilarious hearing the guesses of what you are. My least favorites are ones that have essentially no effort. To me, Halloween is all about expression and fun, however you choose to do it. Being lazy isn’t cool; it’s kinda overdone at this point.

Dr. Marisa Mills, Faculty Advisor:
I don’t really have a favorite Halloween costume, but I do have an irrational hatred of the plain t-shirt that says, ‘THIS IS MY HALLOWEEN COSTUME.’ We get it. You’re too cool for Halloween. You’re Not Like Other Costume-Wearers. I’ll try not to be intimidated by your ‘coolness’ as I waltz by in my Victorian bustle gown.

Quincy Kirn, Writer:
My least favorite Halloween costume has to be those colorful skin-tight suits that cover the face or costumes from “The Purge” franchise. In my opinion, those costumes are slightly lazy and unsettling, but not in a fun way. My favorite costumes are the ones that require a lot of makeup, body paint, or cool costume accessories. I am really fascinated by the creative solutions people are able to come up with.

Justice Emerick, Writer:
My favorite Halloween costume has to be this one time I saw a guy dressed as Shrek’s out-house. I don’t dislike any costume; everyone is entitled to dress how they like and in what is accessible!

Tommy Burkhammer Jr., Writer:
I know it is an unpopular opinion, but I enjoy the costumes you have to think about. I enjoy them because they’re typically able to be interpreted in quite a few ways, so it’s interesting to see the different takes people will have on these costumes. I am a huge scaredy cat, so I dislike the realistic scary costumes. They truly scare me, and I know that’s the point of Halloween costumes, but I personally do not like being scared.

Samantha Viechec, Writer:
My favorite Halloween costumes are the ones that are really scary and gory. A bunch of fake blood, props, and accessories. My least favorite are the ones that show minimal effort. Like when people put on all brown clothes, then write “peanut butter,” or when people dress up like highlighters. To me, Halloween is about being scary, not looking cute.
