The PJC volleyball team secured a place at the Florida state championship tournament with a conference victory against Gulf Coast Community College Oct. 3.

“I’m not going to say anything bad about this game,” said Head Coach Pete Pena.  “We did what we had to do to make it happen.  Everyone did a fantastic job.”

The Lady Pirates defeated the Lady Commodores 3-0, with scores of 30-28, 30-27, and 30-20, becoming the 2006 Panhandle Conference champions.

The state competition will be held in Lakeland during the first week of November.

“We’ve got time between now and then,” Pena said.  “We have got to keep getting better.”

“This one is really special,” said Pena, about winning the conference, “because of all the adversary we’ve had to overcome.”

The Pirates have had many injures throughout the season.  Margo Yates injured her knee in the PJC Classic Sept. 8, but Lori Chancey has rebounded from a sprained ankle and played a part in the Lady Pirates’ win.

“Hopefully Margo will be back because she deserves to be there,” Pena said.

The Lady Pirates still have a few games to play before state, but they have guaranteed themselves a spot in Lakeland.

“We’ve punched our tickets,” Pena said.
