PJC’s Golf Club is gearing up to start a fresh new term.
The club has been in limbo since Hurricane Ivan blew into Pensacola last year.
“We’re reforming right now,” says club advisor and Intramurals Coordinator Doug Rogers. “The club’s just starting to get off the ground again.”
Right now the club (which is sponsored through student activities) is focusing on recruitment, wanting to get a few more members to add to its 8 person roster.
One year, club membership was as high as 24 people.
Students, male and female, are the one’s encouraged to join, but faculty and staff are welcome as well.
The club accepts anyone, whether they’re high (good) or low (bad) handicappers.
“It’s open for anyone and everyone,” says club president Mick Schrepf. “I’d like to see a lot more people out there with us.”
After recruitment, the club plans to get straight down to business.
The club’s home course is Scenic Hills. The club helps the golf course with any ground work that it might need and are allowed to play on the grounds for free.
Current plans also call for a golf trip out of town and to host a local golf tournament in Pensacola in order to raise funds for the club.
The club also plans to do a lot of community work in the future, helping out with the local “junior golfers,” and other programs.
The club has been around since 1996 when Rogers was approached by a adjunct faculty member named Marty Stanovich asked if he would be willing to start up a golf club.
“It’s a good club,” Said Rogers. “It’s a service club. Individually and as a group.”
As for club benefits –
“It’s free golf,” Rogers said. “Sometimes we even get free equipment.”
