The Lady Pirate Volleyball team proved they are a force to be reckoned with at the PJC Classic, the tournament held at the Milton campus for area community college teams, on Friday.

They started off strong against Southern Union Community College from Wadley, Alabama.   During the second game, which they lost, the Pirates used a majority of freshmen.

“They are getting some time to play and making the best of those situations.  They’re getting better and better as time goes on,” said Head Coach Pete Pena.

The Pirates won 2-1 with scores of 30-14, 28-30, and 15-12.

The second match was up against the Cougars of Lawson State Community College of Birmingham.  The Pirates defeated the Cougars 30-22 and 30-17.

“We did alright today.  We put ourselves in a bit of a pressure situation in the first half, but I’m very proud of our responses,” Pena said.

Day two of the PJC Classic was full of ups and downs for the Pensacola Junior College volleyball team.  In the first match, the Pirates were slated against the Bears from Bevill State Community College.  Without much incident, they defeated Bevill State, 30-11, 30-14 and moved to the finals.

The final match up proved to be more of a challenge.  It was PJC vs. Hillsborough Community College in a back and forth match, which ended with the Lady Hawks as the winners.

“I thought we played very well today, especially in beating Bevill.  We did well against Hillsborough too, but Hillsborough is a very good team,” said Coach Pete Pena.

Stand-out players for the Pirates were Chelsey Adams and Alysia Girod, who both made the all-tournament team

As for the rest of the season, Coach Pena feels that they just need to continue working hard.  Also, a few adjustments in the line up will have to be made.  A knee injury Margo Yates received in Friday’s game against Southern Union will have her out for the rest of the season.

“Someone is going to get to step in, probably Stacy McDonald,” said Pena about the situation.  “Everyone is going to continue to work hard.”
