A recent WSRE historical documentary, “Baseball in Pensacola,” led to the opening of the Pensacola State College Learning Lab and WSRE Imagination Station at the Pensacola Bayfront Stadium.
“We uncovered such a rich history of baseball in Pensacola, and the documentary was so well received, this was a way to take it beyond the screen,” said Jill Hubbs, WSRE’s director of education and outreach.
The facility, which opened on April 4, offers free learning opportunities for everyone, especially children, with touch-screen computers, books, and baseball memorabilia highlighting the experience.
“The space was put together for lifelong learners,” Hubbs said, “and it’s here to make connections and engage the community.”
Myra Buskey, who brought her young grandchildren to the Imagination Station, said “the kids were overwhelmed when they walked in; they were very excited.”
While the facility’s focus is on literacy, that doesn’t come from just books anymore.
“This facility is great. They have technology, puzzles, and books, and to use it all is great,” said Buskey. “You can’t pull them (children) away from the technology and electronics.”
Ashley Brown and her preschool daughter enjoyed a few books and educational computer games during their visit.
“My daughter is loving the computers, being able to touch the screen and interact,” said Brown.
Both Brown and Buskey said the facility was very nice.
“Based on the reaction we’ve had so far, it’s going to be a fun summer and beyond,” said Hubbs. “It’s a great place for restless kids to come to during the game.”
With plans of expansion, the PSC Learning Lab will host corporate development and leadership lectures and high school classes in the future.
Former professional baseball players from Pensacola are expected to be involved with activities at the Learning Lab.
The facility is a partnership between PSC, WSRE, and Pensacola Blue Wahoos owners Quint and Rishy Studer.
The Lab is open from 9 a.m to noon on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and during every home game, opening an hour before start time.
