The Vanity Fair Oscar Party is one of the most anticipated events of the year. It draws A-list celebrities and industry insiders. Red carpet interviews offer a glimpse into the personalities behind the stars and films, shaping public perception and influencing box office success. Jake Shane, known for his witty, literal skits on TikTok and his podcast Therapuss, stepped into the red-carpet spotlight alongside YouTuber and model Quenlin Blackwell.
However, their efforts quickly drew criticism. What caught people’s attention was when Shane asked actress Julia Fox if she had a favorite movie from this year. Fox named a few movies, including Mary Bronstein’s If I had Legs I’d Kick You. Shane’s follow-up question about whether she found “the kid so annoying” sparked outrage online. Many viewers felt the question was not only distasteful but dismissive of the film’s serious themes, which center on a mother’s struggle to raise a daughter with a disability. The film explores the complex realities of caregiving and mental health, and given the delicate subject matter, Shane’s tone-deaf question sparked a wider debate about influencers working alongside journalists.
Many of them build their platforms on certain personality traits and stick with them, and though it works for a quick TikTok scroll or YouTube video, it might not translate well when it comes to bigger jobs. Unlike traditional journalists, influencers lack the preparation to conduct meaningful interviews that evoke thoughtful responses. Because influencers are held to such lofty standards and have close relationships with celebrities, there are blurs in professional boundaries. This leads to superficial coverage and diminishes the journalistic aspect of the interviews.
On the other hand, some influencers prove that a blend of formal training and social media experience can work well. Two examples are Drew Afualo and Brittany Broski, both influencers that are Communication graduates. They demonstrate how humor and professionalism can coexist. Their interviews balance wit with respect and insight, showing that influencers with the right background and approach can elevate red carpet coverage. While influencers bring fresh energy and access to new audiences, careful selection and training are essential to uphold the standards of entertainment journalism. With thoughtful choices, the industry can harness the best of both worlds, engaging content that honors the depth and dignity of the stories being told.
